A Filipino penitent grimaces as he is nailed to the cross during Good Friday rituals on April 3, 2015 at Cutud, Pampanga province, northern Philippines. Several Filipino devotees had themselves nailed to crosses Friday to remember Jesus Christ's suffering and death, an annual rite frowned upon by church leaders in this predominantly Roman Catholic country. Thousands of Catholic devotees trooped to a northern Philippine village where dozens of men were nailed to wooden crosses or flogged themselves bloody in annual rituals re-enacting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. At least 60,000 spectators witnessed the rituals held under the blistering sun in at least three villages in Pampanga province, 70 kilometres north of Manila, which are the highlight of Easter celebrations in Asia’s largest predominantly Catholic country.
